Gold and silver prices extended losses for a second day on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Tuesday as rising oil prices fuelled inflation concerns and strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates further.In the domestic market, MCX silver futures for September 2026 delivery were down by Rs 1,542 to Rs 2,25,900 per kg. Gold futures for October 2026 delivery dipped by Rs 235 to Rs 1,46,569 per 10 grams.

In two sessions, the yellow metal has declined Rs 4,300, while silver is down nearly Rs 9,000.US and Iranian officials separately held talks with mediators as part of renewed efforts to end the seven-month war, officials from both countries said.

Oil prices also rose for a second straight session amid continued concerns over possible supply disruptions in the Middle East.Higher oil prices can add to inflation by raising costs across the economy, potentially prompting central banks to keep interest rates higher to contain price pressures.

While gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, higher interest rates tend to weigh on the metal as investors favour assets that offer returns.Markets currently see a 70.3% probability of a Fed rate hike in October, according to the CME's FedWatch Tool.

Fed Governor Lisa Cook said she expects inflationary pressures to persist in the coming months, driven by AI-related demand and higher oil prices, although she did not say that further rate hikes would be necessary.Gold and silver international pricesSpot gold was little changed at $4,124.57 per ounce as of 0140 GMT, after touching its lowest level since August 5 in the previous session.

US gold futures fell 0.3% to $4,156.70.Among other precious metals, spot silver fell 0.6% to $60.62 an ounce, platinum declined 1% to $1,699.86, and palladium slipped 0.5% to $1,209.08.How should you trade gold?Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvi Finmart said that after breaching key support levels, gold and silver prices are likely to remain under pressure, with gold potentially testing 4,110-4,040 and silver 60-59.10 per troy ounce in the short term.In domestic markets, gold closed below Rs 1,47,700 per 10 grams, while silver settled below Rs 2,28,000 per kilogram.

On the MCX, gold could test Rs 1,44,000-1,41,400, while silver may decline towards Rs 2,24,000-2,20,000 in the short term, Jain said.He added that any positive development in the US-Iran peace talks could support prices, while in the absence of such developments, prices are likely to remain under pressure.Jain suggested that traders avoid taking long positions in gold and silver until there is further clarity on the US-Iran peace talks.
