Haberin tamamı
China’s top securities regulator has signalled fresh support for the domestic A-share market, convening a symposium over the weekend as authorities sought to shore up sentiment following a sharp sell-off in technology shares driven by concerns over US sanctions.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) brought together executives from listed companies and experts from securities firms and fund managers at a meeting in Beijing on Saturday to “discuss the country’s capital markets and financial conditions”, according to an online statement.
The meeting was chaired by CSRC chairman Wu Qing, who sought views and suggestions on the current market environment.
It came amid a sharp market correction. China’s CSI 300 Index fell 12 per cent in the third quarter, weighed down by a 31 per cent slump in the tech-heavy Star Market 50 index.
Selling pressure persisted after the week-long National Day holiday.
During intraday trading on Friday, the ChiNext Index briefly fell below the 3,000-point mark, while the Star 50 index dropped more than 4 per cent and slipped below 1,400 points. Both later pared losses and closed slightly higher amid heavy buying, which some market participants linked to government-backed funds.
It was not the first symposium of its kind this year. Following a sharp market correction in July, Wu also chaired a meeting with investors aimed at boosting confidence, after which markets stabilised with policy support and fresh capital inflows.
No new policy measures were outlined in Saturday’s official readout.
Wu urged listed companies and industry institutions to offer suggestions and work together to improve the capital market and deliver better returns to investors.
Participating experts were said to have proposed strengthening market-stabilisation mechanisms, broadening the channels through which medium- and long-term funds could enter the market, and developing “patient capital” willing to invest over longer periods.
They also called for eligible listed companies to increase dividends and share buy-backs, improve investor protection, optimise listing rules, strengthen trading supervision and enhance cross-border risk monitoring.
Beijing faces an uphill battle in attracting long-term overseas capital to China’s A-share market, as funds continue to flow into the United States, where stocks hit new highs last week.
The regulatory push, however, coincided with signs that global active funds were ending a four-year underweight position on Chinese equities, with institutions such as Bank of America pointing to a shift towards benchmark-neutral allocations.
Chinese investment banks including CCB International and Zheshang Securities warned that mainland and Hong Kong equities faced a challenging fourth quarter.
Analysts expected markets to remain range-bound amid persistent expectations of higher US interest rates, tight global liquidity and a shifting sentiment towards artificial intelligence-related stocks.
