Haberin tamamı
The sentiment among investors that China is a “single bet” is giving way to picking individual winners, with technology displacing property as the engine of growth, according to DBS Bank (Hong Kong).
“Instead of looking at China as one big thing, there are selective sectors that we think will benefit from this trend,” Dennis Lam, managing director and head of research at the bank, said during a media briefing on Thursday.
Artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and innovative drugs would become key drivers for the Chinese economy by 2040, signalling “a clear shift away from traditional physical assets to technology,” he said.
To identify potential winners by 2040, DBS evaluated listed Chinese companies in a newly released report and highlighted its top 10 picks. Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, topped the list, followed by drug developer BeOne Medicines, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, chip foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, and precision automation maker Inovance.
Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
However, no carmakers made the list. Lam said China’s EV sector was undergoing an intense shake-out following a massive influx of new entrants, meaning that “some companies will inevitably fail”.
DBS expects mainland China’s equity market to “become deeper and more sophisticated” in the coming decades. The bank forecasts the benchmark CSI 300 Index would reach 9,500 by 2040 – more than double its current level.
Whether the domestic equity market has kept pace with the broader economy remained a central question for global investors, said Moxy Ying, the bank’s Hong Kong and China equity market strategist. “Our answer is there’s still a long way to go.”
China’s stock market capitalisation stood at 78 per cent of gross domestic product at the end of 2025, compared with 219 per cent in the US. DBS projects China’s ratio will climb to 96 per cent by 2040.
The report comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Washington for high-stakes bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump, with AI expected to be a primary focal point. Global investors are watching the summit closely for any signs of easing capital flows.
Foreign holdings currently account for less than 4 per cent of total A-share market capitalisation in China, a stark contrast to roughly 30 per cent in Japan and South Korea and nearly 50 per cent in Taiwan.
Stock markets in Hong Kong and the mainland have lagged regional peers such as Taiwan and South Korea largely because local indices are “not too exposed to the global AI supply chain”, Lam said.
However, Lam noted that the sentiment of China being “uninvestable” had softened recently. He called on global funds to re-evaluate the market through the lens of sustainable advances in AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing.
“Some investors have returned, but not in a big way,” he said. “I think the capital flow story is completely untapped yet.”
