Bagchi has already joined HDFC Bank's board as an Additional Director, effective October 2, for a three-year term as MD & CEO.
Bagchi, an ICICI Group veteran with over three decades of experience, is currently the outgoing MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. His appointment ends the uncertainty over HDFC Bank's top leadership after Sashidhar Jagdishan announced that he would not seek reappointment as MD & CEO when his current term ends later this month. What are experts saying?Jefferies retained its Buy rating on the lender with a target price of Rs 880 per share.
The brokerage said the RBI's approval of Anup Bagchi as MD & CEO will provide greater clarity on management succession and the bank's strategic direction. It said timely team changes, if any, along with opportunities from improving retail credit growth, better cross-sell fees and calibrated re-risking of the loan mix could support earnings and a re-rating of the stock from its attractive 1.4x FY28E adjusted price-to-book valuation.
Jefferies added that this could also support valuations across other banks.Jefferies said HDFC Bank, like most large banks, could benefit from any rate hikes, with around 70% of its loans linked to EBLR or floating rates.
It added that a recalibration of the risk profile towards higher risk-adjusted segments such as SME and business banking loans, gold loans and unsecured personal loans could support return on assets expansion.HDFC Bank's valuation gap with peers including ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank and State Bank of India has been disrupted, Jefferies said.
With CEO succession now behind the bank, a timely team reorganisation could strengthen execution and support a re-rating.Morgan Stanley also maintained its Overweight rating on HDFC Bank with a share price target of Rs 1,025.
