<p>INPEX Corp said Friday it will acquire fellow Japanese company JERA Co Inc's minority stake in Australia's Ichthys LNG, raising its operating stake to over 68 percent.</p> <p>That prevents JERA from completing an earlier agreement to sell its ownership of less than one percent to EIG's MidOcean Energy.</p> <p>"INPEX exercised its pre-emptive rights under the respective JOAs [Joint Operating Agreements] and SHA [Shareholder Agreement] to acquire JERA's participating interest in the projects", INPEX said in an online statement.</p> <p>"The impact of this matter on INPEX's consolidated financial results is minimal", INPEX added.</p> <p>The Ichthys facilities in Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, produce up to 9.3 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG), 1.65 MMtpa of liquefied petroleum gas and over 100,000 barrels per day of condensate, according to INPEX.

Feed gas comes from the namesake offshore field, estimated to contain over 12 trillion cubic feet of gas and 500 million barrels of condensate, in Western Australia's Browse Basin via an 890-kilometer (approximately 553 miles) pipeline.</p> <p>The other owners are France's TotalEnergies SE (26 percent), Taiwan's state-owned CPC Corp (2.625 percent) and Japanese companies Daigas/Osaka Gas Group (1.2 percent), Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (1.2 percent) and Toho Gas Co Ltd (0.42 percent).</p> <p><strong>Gorgon</strong></p><div id='newsArticleDianomoAds' style='display:none'><hr style='margin:5px 0px;'><div style='color:#808080;text-align: center;'>Advertisement - Scroll to continue</div><div class='dianomi_context' data-dianomi-context-id='4460'></div></div> <p>JERA said separately on Friday another deal to sell its 0.417 percent interest in Western Australia's Gorgon LNG to MidOcean is in the works.

MidOcean will increase its stake to 1.417 percent.</p> <p>Gorgon comprises three liquefaction trains with a combined production of up to 15.6 MMtpa of LNG and a domestic gas plant with a capacity of 300 terajoules a day, according to operator Chevron Corp. Located on Barrow Island, the plants process feed gas from the offshore Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields.</p> <p>The Houston, Texas-based company operates Gorgon with a 47.33 percent stake.

The other owners are the United States' Exxon Mobil Corp (25 percent), Britain's Shell PLC (25 percent) and Daigas (1.25 percent).</p> <p>JERA said it will continue to procure LNG from the two facilities despite its exit.</p> <p>"Australia remains a strategically important partner and a trusted and reliable source of LNG for JERA.

The company remains committed to its Australian LNG portfolio and to its major investments in Australia, including the Wheatstone LNG Project, the Barossa Gas Project and the Scarborough Energy Project", JERA said.</p> <p><strong>Browse</strong></p> <p>Separately INPEX failed to complete a transaction to acquire China National Petroleum Corp's (CNPC) 10.67 percent stake in another Australian gas project.

Operator Woodside exercised its co-venturer right to "pre-empt" CNPC's sale to INPEX.</p> <p>The Browse project will develop new fields in the namesake basin, connect them via a new pipeline of about 900 kilometers to the existing infrastructure in Karratha (part of the already producing North West Shelf project) and add two floating production, storage and offloading facilities.</p> <p><em>To contact the author, email jov.onsat@rigzone.com</em></p>
