Haberin tamamı

UK fund house Schroders will increase investment and headcount in Hong Kong after being acquired by US asset manager Nuveen, according to Schroders’ global CEO.

“Hong Kong is a critical interface for mainland China through schemes like Wealth Management Connect,” Richard Oldfield said in an online interview with the South China Morning Post on Friday. The scheme, launched in 2021, allows investors in the Greater Bay Area to buy wealth-management products across borders.

Underpinning Schroders’ aim to increase investment in the city was the government’s first five-year plan, announced last month, which would enhance integration between the city and the mainland market, Oldfield said.

“While there are no immediate plans to move to larger offices, headcount in Hong Kong has already increased over the last nine months,” he said.

“We are going to increase headcount in Hong Kong in the future. I am very excited about the work that the Hong Kong government is doing to make Hong Kong a more appealing location for private markets professionals to come live and work.”

Oldfield unveiled the expansion ambition for Hong Kong, as well as Asia, just a day after US asset manager Nuveen completed its acquisition of Schroders on Thursday, creating a giant financial firm with about US$2.6 trillion of assets under management, based on the two firms’ data as of the end of June.

After the takeover, Schroders would continue to operate independently for 12 to 18 months with Oldfield in charge, according to the company. Investment strategies would remain unchanged, but the sales teams of the two firms would collaborate during that time, Oldfield added.

The new combined group would become Europe’s second-largest asset manager after Paris-based Amundi, which had US$2.7 trillion in assets under management, according to LSEG Data and Analytics.

Hong Kong is one of Schroders’ key Asian hubs, and the combined group manages US$320 billion of assets in Asia, representing around 12 per cent of the total.

“Asia is the fastest growing part of the world, and therefore what we expect to see as Schroders and Nuveen is that the portion of our assets grows at a faster rate in Asia,” Oldfield said.

“Asia is not an adjunct to our strategy. It is actually central to our future growth. The combination of Schroders and Nuveen gives us a much broader set of capabilities to serve clients, particularly in the areas of wealth, retirement, and private markets, which are especially important in the region.”

The Asia-Pacific region has provided Schroders’ fastest growth globally over the last 12 months, driven by two sources of capital: international investors who want to diversify their investments in the region and growth in local client investments as the middle class expands.

“Our sales teams need to come together, and that is because I cannot have a client in Hong Kong have someone from Schroders knock on the door at 10 o’clock and then another team from Nuveen knock on the door at 11 o’clock,” he said.

Although Beijing has tightened control on cross-border investments since May and added a 20 per cent tax levy on overseas investments in July, Oldfield said he remained bullish on the long-term growth of Hong Kong and mainland China. The growing number of wealthy clients and the ageing population’s higher demand for retirement savings solutions supported that outlook, he said.

Schroders conducts onshore business in mainland China via a joint venture with Bank of Communications, while its Hong Kong unit serves offshore clients.
