Haberin tamamı
Segen has launched a new residential finance product for the UK market, fully integrating solar loans with the distributor’s digital proposal platform used by partner installers.
Segen’s solar financing spreads the cost of solar and battery installations over terms of two to 10 years, at a representative annual percentage rate (APR) of 9.9%. Financing can cover the full installation cost, including equipment, labour and scaffolding.
Financing will be available through approved installers in Segen’s network, and contracts will be arranged between the homeowner and digital lender Zopa Bank, with Segen Finance acting as the credit broker. It follows a similar partnership between Segen Finance and BNP Paribas offering solar loans for the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment, launched in 2025.
James Walker, head of solar financing and payments EMEA at Segen, told pv magazine the finance product could “open up the next tranche of homeowners” who are interested in solar, understand the benefits, but do not have GBP 10,000 ($13,300) “lying around.”
For installers, Walker said there are cashflow advantages to offering financing through the distributor. Once homeowners apply for financing, Segen installer partners can schedule a hardware delivery date without using their credit facility with the distributor.
“There’s no outlay for the hardware, which can be up to 40% to 50% of the total install cost,” he said.
Final payment for the installer is disbursed by Segen following final sign off from the homeowner that the work has been completed.
The residential finance offer has been integrated with Segen’s Proposal Tool, which is used by installers to design systems and send quotes to homeowners. Integration means homeowners can apply for finance directly through a dedicated link.
“The way the product works, when an installer sends a proposal through to a homeowner that homeowner can review the [PV] system, the technical details and what the savings are from an electrical point of view, and the benefits it provides them, and then choose that they are happy to go ahead,” Walker explained. “Where it gets interesting is when they come to the checkout, they can choose to pay directly with their installer or they can pay through Segen Finance
Homeowners who choose financing are then able to review contract options and terms offered by Zopa Bank on the platform, and undertake a soft credit check if they decide to proceed.
“It’s all integrated through API connectivity. They go to the site and fill out the credit application form, which takes about two minutes. Then they find out instantly whether they’re approved or not,” Walker said.
Walker said Segen selected Zopa Bank as it was able to more quickly integrate directly with Segen’s software, meaning installers can offer solar leasing as part of a typical design consultation with customers. The finance boss added that while Segen held conversations with traditional high street banks, it became clear that integrating with large institutional banks would have taken significantly longer.
The launch of Segen Finance for residential consumers comes as the UK government prepares to provide further support via its Warm Home Loans program, and Walker confirmed Zopa Bank is one of the providers that has been involved in consultation with the government ahead of launch.
When live, the program will essentially see the UK government subsidizing some of the risk associated with solar financing, allowing lenders to offer lower rates.
“It’s lowering the interest rate of loans for any renewable installation,” Walker explained. “As soon as Zopa Bank is getting that subsidy from the government, we’ll be passing that straight through to the homeowner,” Walker said. Segen confirmed that homeowners signing up for finance before the Warm Home Loans program goes live will not be eligible for a retroactive adjustment to the interest rate on their loan.
