The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has asked Tesla to answer questions about how it certified the Cybercab, a vehicle designed without conventional steering wheels and pedals. Tesla’s response is due September 30.

NHTSA is examining Tesla’s technical data and its interpretation of federal vehicle-safety requirements. The agency is also seeking clarity on whether temporarily installed human-driver controls or other equipment played a role in the certification process.
